New Grant Brings Journalism Innovation Opportunities for ASU Cronkite Students

ASU cronkite schoolOne hundred years after the birth of the late Edith Kinney Gaylord, a journalism pioneer and philanthropist, the foundation she established is finding new ways to invest in journalism’s future.

The Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation has awarded Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication an $800,000 grant for students to learn and experience news innovation and to spread new ideas across journalism.

The new grant funds the Edith Kinney Gaylord News Innovation Initiative at the Cronkite School. The program will serve as the innovation hub for Cronkite News at Arizona PBS, a multiplatform daily news division operated by the Cronkite School with 15 full-time editor/professors and more than 120 ASU students who produce daily news content on TV and digital platforms for Arizona audiences.

ASU Honors ABC News Anchor Diane Sawyer With 2010 Cronkite Award

Diane Sawyer, the award-winning anchor of ABC’s flagship newscast “World News with Diane Sawyer,” is this year’s recipient of the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism. Sawyer will accept the 27th annual award on Nov. 12, 2010 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix (for ticket information, contact Liz Bernreuter at 602.496.9444).

“Walter Cronkite set the gold standard for broadcast journalism,” Sawyer said. “I was lucky enough to have worked with him, learned from him, and was able to see his humane intelligence at work in our lives. I am honored to accept this award in the spirit of Walter’s indelible legacy.”

ASU Announces Largest In-Kind Grant From Siemens

Arizona State University (ASU) will enrich its engineering education and provide students more advanced preparation to enter the workforce through an in-kind software grant from Siemens PLM Software to ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering announced today. Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division, is a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services. With a commercial value of nearly $245 million, it is the largest in-kind grant in the university’s history.
