OT students serve at Arc of Putnam County

Service learning is a big component of the experience at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences because it helps the community and benefits students. This week a group of over 30 students and faculty from the occupational therapy program in St. Augustine spent the day at Arc of Putnam County in Florida, providing much-needed services to the clients of the nonprofit organization, which serves those with severe disabilities.

Diplomas were awarded to nearly 100 San Marcos students who also received their new academic hoods for their ceremonial regalia.

Christmas Lecture Was a Blast

It was fun to be there as University of the Pacific faculty members Balint Sztarary and Liang Xue presented the 7th Annual Faraday Christmas Lecture at Pacific campus in Stockton. The annual Faraday Lecture featured the chemistry professors dressed as 19th century chemists, carrying out experiments that delighted audiences of all ages. The tradition comes from the Royal Institution of Great Britain’s Christmas Lecture, which has offered a science lecture to children in the London community since 1825. The famous scientist Michael Faraday presented more of these lectures than any of his contemporaries, and the series was eventually named after him. The annual lecture pays homage to Faraday while also entertaining Stockton youth and teaching them about chemistry. Here’s my video story from the event.

Storytelling to Save Lives

I was recently hired to produce a video for the Sedona show for This Is My Brave, a thriving new nonprofit with a vital mission: to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues by sharing personal stories of individuals living successful, full lives despite mental illness through poetry, essay and original music, on stage in front of a live audience, and through stories published online. “Through the sharing of stories and experiences of those in recovery, we provide a sense of community and hope; and encourage others to share their stories. We believe that each time one of us shares our story, there’s another crack helping to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness. Right now, it’s time to #LiveBrave, stand up with us to say #isharemystory and help us bring mental health issues into the spotlight because they’ve been in the dark too long.” To learn more visit www.thisismybrave.org.

California Cool a Great Success

On Saturday, February 4, Laguna Art Museum’s annual Art Auction fundraiser with works by over 100 California artists reached sales of over $366,000 [see my video story from the event above].  Proceeds from the event benefit the museum’s exhibitions and education programs. The highlight of the evening was the much anticipated live auction led by Aaron Bastian of Bonhams.  The museum once again partnered with Paddle8, the leading online auction house, and absentee bids from near and far added a further element of excitement to the competitive bidding.
