Joe Attended the Final Rehearsal of Kathy Griffin’s new show debuting this week on Bravo
I’m a big fan of two-time Emmy winner Kathy Griffin and a long time ‘D-List’ devote, so you can imagine my delight when I learned about her new show on Bravo. After six seasons of ‘My Life on the D-List’ and 13 televised stand-up specials since 2005 (with two more to come later this year), the network premieres ‘Kathy’ this week (Thursdays, 10PM).
On Friday night I was in the audience for the final rehearsal of ‘Kathy’ at Sunset Bronson Studios in Hollywood. Joined by rising PR star Frank Fay (@frankfay), we enjoyed an intimate sneak peak at the new show and I have no doubt it will delight audiences and add to the growing legion of Kathy Griffin fans. I’m also certain that there will be a lot of bleeped out words, even for a late-night cable program. It was hilarious!
Bravo describes ‘Kathy’ as a one hour talk show where “the original gossip girl will have a whole hour to deflate the egos of everyone who is anyone and those who think they’re someone. ‘Kathy’ will showcase Griffin’s unique take on celebrities, co-workers, friends, politicians, and yes, even her own boxed-wine swilling mother, Maggie. She’ll be burning the last of her already very few bridges all while enforcing a clothing optional work environment.”
The final rehearsal was nothing short of entertaining, complete with an appearance from 91-year-old Maggie (we didn’t see any boxed wine but she did have a really big purse with her), and Kathy’s personal assistant Heidi. The show’s opening sequence features a sexy Griffin driving through Hollywood and LA, singing an original song written just for her show. “That was me singing with a shit ton of auto-tune,” she told the audience. Recording the show with a small live audience was important; Griffin told the Huffington Post “I want it to feel intimate. I want people to feel like they’re just hanging out at a dinner party, overhearing stuff that I shouldn’t say. Just hanging out with a friend, letting the fur fly.”
So what is the new show all about? Imagine if you took elements from popular shows like Chelsea Lately, The Soup and Tosh.O (such as clips from reality shows, a panel of comedians discussing celebrity gossip and hilarious pre-filmed video vignettes) mixed them all up with a generous amount of Kathy Griffin’s humor, a pinch of her celebrity run-ins and a heaping scoop of her no-holds-barred attitude, and you get ‘Kathy.’ My favorite was the final segment with Griffin’s mom, called “Maggie Tucks Us In.”
“Look, I’ve called Academy Award winners a-holes and shown the world my awesome 51 year-old boobs, so I asked myself, what else is there to do,” Griffin said in a Bravo press release. “I’m a true original. A snowflake! Time for a talk show, of course! So I called Bravo and clearly, they wanted to see pop culture get bent over by me, so here we go! It WILL hurt, America, but in a good way, I promise. Weeee!!!!”
Set your DVR to record ‘Kathy’ on Thursday nights at 10PM; based on the final rehearsal, I know you’ll be entertained.
